St. Louis MO
Last Sunday marked the official opening of the 2007-08 St. Louis Fylers training camp. The usual cast of characters returned, tanned and refreshed from an off season of golf and macrame.
Head Coach Cliff Hampton was optimistic after the first full scrimmage Sunday.
"I think we've got a good shot this year. The boys have worked hard through the summer and they've come ready to compete. It'll be a tough camp, but that's the idea."
Back up goalie Joel Lewis had an impressive outing after falling short toward the end of last season and being put on a fitness regimen through the off season. Critics are doubtful he'll challenge starting goalie Davev Bain for the top spot, but having two healthy goalies on top of their game through the season is a big bonus for the Fylers.
Despite some notable veteran absences from this first week, there are a handful of new faces that Fylers management are hopeful will be on the roster for the long haul. Gabe Peters, a feisty play maker from Fylers farm team in Hermann has been making an impression through the off season. Two walk ons, John and Brian have signed preliminary agreements with the team, but not further details are available.
Action continues Sunday September 9th at Brentwood Gardens, 9am. If the rains hold off, we should get a glimpse of the future of Fylers hockey.
