Despite the miserable turnouts the last couple of weeks, the Fylers are making every attempt to put their best face forward and keep morale high. Some Fylers are giving more than others, at least in the face department.
The close call this past Sunday might be called an impromptu deflection by defenseman Donald Williams, but judging by the gasps from the crowd, it was anything but intentional. His daring supraorbital deflection on a shot from the point gave new meaning to the hockey axiom "keep your eye on the puck." Although goalie Dave Bain denied the resulting 'shot,' Williams was left with what promises to be a fine looking shiner. At the time of publication, no corroborating photo evidence had been received.
Skipper Cliff Hampton, known usually to praise a player for sacrificing the body, was a bit more conservative.
"We're having enough trouble getting numbers as it is. The last thing we need is for some of our own to go picking guys off. I want the players safe out there."
Protect the face at all times and what better time could there be than this Sunday August 26th. We'll usher out this infernal month together at 9am, the Gardens.
