The first full rink scrimmage since relocating to the Brentwood Gardens has breathed life back into the beleaguered Fylers. Sunday saw unrelenting, and at times intense action as over ten skaters and both Fylers goalies christened their temporary home.
But this development has done little to quell Fylers critics who say this move to the Gardens has seriously affected the numbers for team, and when looking at the make-up of last week’s turnout, one has to agree.
Fylers veterans accounted for the two goalies and only five skaters in Sunday’s festivities. The holes were filled in by Garden regulars and a ringer recruited by Seeger from another league leaving the sport world and fans alike questioning the Fylers resiliency in this lean time.
Worse yet, Fylers fans were given a taste of what it would be like to see their beloved Kevin Bayer in an opponent’s jersey when, for games two and three, he switched sides to play with the Garden regulars. Is a trade a foot?
“ It’s a scrimmage people. I decided to switch up the lines to get some variety going. Let’s not make a big deal about it. “defended Fylers’ coach Cliff Hampton.
Bayer who is in the third year of his six-year deal for an undisclosed amount was equally ambivalent about the skipper’s move, but preferred to remain off the record.
Still there’s little question Fylers veterans are at the height of their game. Sure they went one for three and were playing against a couple of children, but the third game was a nail biter and ended up 4-5. And let’s not forget the two dyed in the wool Fylers between the pipes were nothing if not solid.
Even with that optimism, it looks like the Fylers are closing ranks a little this week. Instead of the usual Sunday workout at
Brentwood Gardens, team officials have announced this
Saturday May 12th 9am for the team meeting.
