The Fylers did their best last weekend to settle into the once hostile environment at the Brentwood Gardens. Sure, it’s bigger, better kept, and you don’t have to worry the concession workers will try to sell you weed or lift your cell phone if left unattended, but it’s not home.
“I never thought I’d say it, but I kinda miss the old barn,” pined forward John Frain after Sunday’s outing. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in a rush to get back there, but there’s a romantic in me.”
And there is a certain charm to the place once you get past the broken glass and human feces. The Tilles complex in South City has stood, for years, as a beacon for semi-amateur hockey in our gateway city. Fylers ownership for one, is not turning its back on the place.
“We’ll be back. Bigger and badder than before…Oh and by ‘bad ‘ I mean tough you know. Not like worse players,” clarified spokesman Pierre Reedy.
The change of venue may have an upside as it seems to have caught the eye of players around the country. Rumors circulated, Wednesday after forward Matthew Shultz, currently with the Brooklyn Toads, was in town for meetings with management. More on this as details emerge.
For now, the Fylers will continue as ill-mannered house guests at the
Brentwood Gardens.
Sunday at 9am pucks will be dropped. Will you be there to feel the intensity they call Fylers Hockey?
