Last weekend marked an escalation in tension between the Fylers and their arch rivals, The Elements. This long and embittered battle is as fierce as any Wings/Avs or Hab/Leafs rivalry, but to this point, the results have decidedly favored the Elements.
Water, until now the most notorious Element, has dished out more than his fair share of drubbings over the years. Just a few weeks ago, Earth’s unrefined if not disgusting debut showed the south city boys that even their fourth line can uhh…produce. But no one could have prepared for Fire’s league inauguration.
“I’ve always said Fire was their ace in the hole,” head coach Cliff Hampton commented Sunday. “But now, we’ve seen their best, we’ll make some adjustments, and next time we'll come out on top.”
The skippers’ confidence is reassuring if only for a moment when one considers that the Elements have still yet to really let their hereto unknown rookie Wind loose at all. Hampton disagrees:
“We’ve followed Wind in Juniors, and I while I think he’s got some promise, Fire has always been the player we were most concerned about.”
And concerned they should be. Fire’s outing this weekend left the Tilles complex in shambles, rendering it essentially unplayable for the foreseeable future. And there’s already talk that if Fire is what he seems to be, the league may not be able to hold him.
Brentwood Gardens will play host to the Fylers this Sunday at 9am. The once unfriendly barn looks to be the Fylers new home away from home at least for the next few weeks. Players will need to come en masse and ready to skate as they’ll look to put this trial by Fire behind them.
