Following the cancellation of last week much anticipated New Years Eve game, Fylers management continue to field criticism from the community for the current state of their facilities. Heavy rains pounded the rink late Saturday night forcing a game time cancellation and leaving fans and players scratching their heads and wondering how long before this new arena is a reality.
“An organization like this, with its rich traditions and deep pockets, it can’t find a way to have a hockey game when there’s a little rain? It’s shameful.” said a fan preferring to remain anonymous.
Despite the criticism, Fylers owners and management emphasize their commitment to improving conditions at Tilles, but continue to fan the flames of debate surrounding the funding.
“We have a lot of dedicated people working very hard to move this organization in the right direction, but we’re not in a position to make this kind of investment without the city and county behind us. We love the city, we love the fans, but this is a business. “
Even Fylers diehards lament the current state of the team's home rink. "When the wind rips through there, it's almost too much to take," said longtime Fylers supporter Odell Clifton. "I don't know how much longer we can keep going to games here," added his wife, Juniata, clad in a blue-and-red Fylers scarf she knitted herself. "We love the old barn, but you know, we're pretty old ourselves. Cold days like this, we'd just as soon stay home and watch the games on TV."
As the debate over arena funding rages on, forecasts indicate a dry weekend ensuring Fylers action
Sunday January 7th, 9am at the Tilles complex. One question remains: will the players show up?
